Debt solutions

Every option, explained clearly

There isn't one right answer — the best solution depends on your income, your debts and what matters to you. Here's what the main UK options actually mean.

Informal

Debt Management Plan (DMP)

UK-wide

An informal agreement to pay your debts back at a reduced, affordable monthly amount over a longer period.

What's good

  • One affordable monthly payment
  • Flexible — you can adjust or exit at any time
  • No fees when set up through a not-for-profit provider

Things to consider

  • Interest and charges may still apply
  • Not legally binding on creditors
  • Likely to affect your credit file
Formal

Individual Voluntary Arrangement (IVA)

England, Wales, Northern Ireland

A legally binding agreement with your creditors to pay what you can afford, usually over five to six years. Any remaining debt is written off at the end.

What's good

  • Legally protects you from creditor action
  • Interest and charges usually frozen
  • Remaining unsecured debt written off at the end

Things to consider

  • Impacts your credit file for six years
  • May affect homeowners with equity
  • Fees apply and it's a serious commitment
Formal

Debt Relief Order (DRO)

England, Wales, Northern Ireland

A low-cost option for people on low incomes with limited assets and up to £50,000 of unsecured debt.

What's good

  • Payments frozen for 12 months
  • Debts written off if situation hasn't improved
  • Lower cost than bankruptcy

Things to consider

  • Strict eligibility criteria
  • Recorded on your credit file for six years
  • Some professions have restrictions
Formal

Protected Trust Deed

Scotland

A formal Scottish alternative to bankruptcy, typically lasting four years, that ring-fences your assets and stops creditor pressure.

What's good

  • Legally binding on your creditors
  • Interest and charges frozen
  • Remaining debt written off at the end

Things to consider

  • Impacts your credit file for six years
  • Home equity may be considered
  • Only available in Scotland
Formal

Bankruptcy

UK-wide

A formal legal process to clear debts you can't repay. Serious, but sometimes the fastest route to a fresh start.

What's good

  • Most unsecured debts written off
  • Creditor action stops immediately
  • Usually discharged within 12 months

Things to consider

  • Application fees apply
  • Assets and home may be affected
  • Impacts your credit file for six years
Temporary

Breathing Space

England, Wales

A 60-day pause on creditor action, contact and most interest while you take stock and get proper advice.

What's good

  • Stops calls, letters and enforcement
  • Freezes interest and charges
  • Gives you time to plan

Things to consider

  • It's temporary — not a debt write-off
  • You must be receiving debt help
  • One application per 12 months
Informal

Token Payments

UK-wide

Small, symbolic monthly payments (often £1) offered to creditors when you genuinely can't afford more, to keep engagement while you plan next steps.

What's good

  • Shows creditors you're engaging
  • Interest is often frozen while accepted
  • Buys time to plan a longer-term solution

Things to consider

  • Not legally binding on creditors
  • Doesn't reduce what you owe
  • Meant as a short-term bridge only
Informal

Full & Final Settlement

UK-wide

A one-off lump sum offered to a creditor to settle a debt for less than the full balance — closing the account entirely if accepted in writing.

What's good

  • Clears the debt for less than the full balance
  • Single one-off payment with a clean end
  • Stops future interest and creditor contact

Things to consider

  • Requires an available lump sum
  • Creditors don't have to accept
  • Usually marked on your credit file for six years
