Debts in the deceased's sole name are paid from the estate. If there isn't enough, they usually end there — family members are not personally liable.
Joint debts remain the responsibility of the surviving joint holder.
Some products (certain loans and mortgages) include life cover that clears the balance on death — always check the paperwork.
