Debt caused by identity fraud — the correction process

Report to Action Fraud, dispute with the lender, register with CIFAS. Each step matters.

If accounts have been opened in your name without your knowledge, report to Action Fraud on 0300 123 2040 or online — you'll get a crime reference number, which is essential for later steps.

Contact each lender showing a fraudulent account. Under FCA rules they must investigate and, if satisfied, remove the debt and any credit file markers. Cifas offers Protective Registration — an extra check on your name for a small annual fee.

For debts that have been passed to collectors, send a copy of the crime reference and any lender confirmation to the collector. Do not pay under threat — a genuine fraud debt is not yours to pay.
